Configure VS for X++ Development
Configuring Visual Studio 2022 for X++ development is easy but requires a specific installer for LocalDB which can we hard to find on the first run-through.
Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sql-server/sql-server-downloads and download the installer for SQL Server 2025 Express – option on the right.
Run the installer then select “download media”
Next, select “LocalDB” and note the download location. Click download.
Next, extract and run the installer that was download, taking all defaults.
Visual Studio 2022
Open Visual Studio 2022 and select “Continue Without Code”
Click On “Extension” (Menu) then “Manage Extensions”. Next search for “Power Platform” then click install.
VS 2022 will install this on next start. Once this has installed, go to the Tools menu then options. Search for “Power”. Set your options as you’d like. Here is how I have my options set. Set these however works best for you.
Next, go to Tools (Menu) then select connect to dataverse.
This will launch a pop up. I typically uncheck “Sign in as currency user” and also “Display list of available organizations”. This will challenge for auth on a different user and ask for a specific URL you’d like to connect to.
next, select the solution.
Once connected, you may be prompted to install F&O Dev Tools. If not, go to the tools menu then select “Download Dynamics 365 FinOps Assets”. If all is well, all components will be downloaded and development capabilities configured. This may take up to an hour. Review output in “FinOps Cloud Runtime” in the output window to see the current status of the install.
