Building a Proper Slide Master

Let’s talk about what a slide master is and how to go about building a proper slide master!

This is totally self serving but as someone who presents at a lot of conferences, I see a wide range of slide masters. Some are great. Some are chaos. Some make me question every life choice that led me to opening the deck. So, I recorded a short video to walk through why a solid slide master matters. If you want to check the documentation too then you can check – what is a slide master, customize a slide master.

Why building a proper slide master even matters

A slide master is basically the backbone of your presentation. It sets the theme, the layouts, the fonts, the colors, the whole personality of your deck. When it’s done well, every new slide you add already looks like it belongs. When it’s done poorly, every new slide looks like it’s fighting for its life.

The slide master controls two big things:

  • Theme settings: your fonts, colors, and overall style
  • Available layouts: title slides, content slides, two-column layouts, section headers, all the stuff speakers rely on

If these layouts are set up properly, speakers can drop in their content from other events and everything snaps into place. No wrestling with formatting. No “why is this text suddenly Comic Sans.” No chaos.

Start from a blank presentation

This part is important. A good slide master starts from a blank presentation using the default formats. Not from a deck someone already messed with. Not from a template that’s been copied 47 times. Blank. Clean. Fresh start energy.

From there, update the theme settings:

  • Brand colors
  • Brand fonts

This ensures every new slide uses the approved branding automatically. You don’t have to manually fix every text box. You don’t have to chase down rogue colors. Everything stays consistent without you doing extra work.

This part wasn’t in the video, but it’s a huge win for anyone building decks for teams, conferences, or repeat presentations.

Make life easier for speakers

When your layouts are clean and intentional, speakers can just copy in their slides from other events and everything behaves. The formatting adjusts. The fonts match. The colors align. The deck looks cohesive even if multiple people contributed.

It’s one of the simplest ways to make your event look polished without forcing speakers to rebuild everything from scratch.

Wrap up

So yes, this is self serving because I want your decks to be easier for me to use when I present. But it’s also genuinely helpful for anyone building presentations for conferences, teams, or recurring workshops. A good slide master saves time, reduces frustration, and makes your content look way more professional with way less effort.
