Welcome to the first instalment of our Maps Around the World blog series! We’re kicking things off with a light-hearted take on global geography through the lens of popular internet memes. Team Maplytics is all about #maps #locations #locationintelligence #geoanalytics and so on. Hence, this series was long overdue. From travel expectations gone wrong to the never-ending debate on how different nationalities see the world, let’s explore some hilarious map-based memes and how Maplytics could have helped make things a little easier!
“Expectation vs.” Reality”—Travel Edition
Expectation:
You’ve seen the pictures—the iconic blue domes of Santorini, the perfect golden hour lighting, and an empty, peaceful landscape straight out of a dream. The blue sea, the white structures, and the blue domes handhold you to splurge on a trip.
Reality:
You arrive only to be met with swarms of tourists, overpriced food, booked seats near the sea, and the struggle to find a good spot for that Insta-worthy photo. Oh, and let’s not forget the sunburn!
Meme Quote: “Santorini looks so peaceful… until you get there.”
Trivia: Had you used Maplytics, you could have easily found less crowded areas using Heat Map Analysis and identified nearby restaurants with POI (Point of Interest) search to avoid overpriced tourist traps! Even better, you would have been able to analyze the tourist density in Santorini and picked up a different destination together!
“Geography According to Some”
Map of Europe:
- Germany labeled as “France’s Neighbor”
- The UK renamed “Harry Potter Land”
- Italy now officially “Pizza HQ”
Map of Africa:
Just one label across the entire continent: “Lions & Safari.”
Meme Quote: “Not Everyone, but… some People.”
Trivia: With Maplytics, you wouldn’t need to rely on stereotypes! You could use our Location Intelligence to discover real cultural hotspots and even plan routes to find the best pizza in Italy—or in your own city!
“Living in Canada Be Like”
Winter Months:
A person bundled in five layers, shoveling snow at -30°C.
Summer Months:
The same person, now sweating profusely because it’s suddenly 35°C.
Meme Quote: “Canada doesn’t have seasons, just weather’s mood swings.” OR
“The weather of Canada is definitely a Gemini.”
Trivia: Think Canada has no seasons? Maplytics’ Heat Maps could actually track climate patterns in different Canadian cities, showing the best times to visit specific states based on historical weather trends.
“Meanwhile in Australia”
Viral Images:
- A kangaroo casually lounging in someone’s backyard.
- A giant spider hanging out on the wall.
- A snake making itself comfortable in the toilet like a rent payer.
Meme Quote: “Australia: Where WILDLIFE keeps you on your toes.”
Trivia: Whether you’re looking for urban areas free of wildlife encounters or need quick routes to the nearest hospital, Maplytics’ Route Optimization can help you plan your safest adventures in the land Down Under!
“Europeans vs. Americans on a Road Trip”
Europeans:
“Let’s drive four hours and visit three different countries!”
Americans:
Four hours later… still in Texas.
Meme Quote: “Scale is a funny thing.”
Trivia: Planning a multi-country road trip in Europe? Route Optimization can help you find the best stops along the way. Meanwhile, in the U.S., it can help you navigate those endless highways efficiently, or, if you prefer, avoid them. Multi-country, multi-city trips can also be planned efficiently with Auto Scheduling, allotting sufficient time slots for all touristy activities and downtime.
Bonus: “The True Size of Africa”
Many world maps shrink Africa’s actual landmass. In reality, Africa is large enough to fit the U.S., China, India, and most of Europe inside it!
Meme Quote: “Your map is lying to you.”
Trivia: Use Maplytics’ Geocoding to explore real-world geographic dimensions, locations, and better understand how large (or small) places actually are!
Bonus: “Time Zones are Weird”
Scenario:
- Call someone in India at 9 AM from New York, and it’s already evening there.
- Fly from China to the U.S. and land ‘before’ you took off.
Meme Quote: “Time zones: Where logic goes on a break.”
Trivia: Need to schedule global meetings? Maplytics’ Live Tracking with the newly added Time Zone facility can help you avoid those awkward 3 AM calls!
The world is full of quirks, and maps are a great way to explore them—whether for fun or serious navigation, or business. Stay tuned for the next blog in our Maps Around the World series, where we dive deeper into fascinating global mapping trends!
