Working with Telemetry in D365FO

D365FO offers robust, built‑in telemetry features when Application Insights is enabled. Setting up Application Insights is a simple step that delivers huge value. Once enabled, you gain a clearer picture of what’s happening inside your D365FO environment and can start making data‑driven improvements with confidence.

These capabilities deliver valuable visibility into system behavior, allowing you to monitor performance, troubleshoot issues, and optimize operations.

In this post, I’ll walk through how to configure and capture the default telemetry events available out of the box.

To begin, open the Azure portal and search for Application Insights.

Select the service and click New to create a new Application Insight with the details of Resource group , Region . I left the other default parameters as it is.

When the resource is deployed, you will be able to see a new Application Insight .

Make a note of ‘Instrumentation Key’ and ‘Connection string’

Go to your D365FO instance and make sure the feature ‘Monitoring and Telemetry’ is enabled. The feature is on by default from 10.0.45 . If you want to disable , use the disable button.

How to set up?

Once this feature is enabled, you will be able to see the configuration in System Adminstration-> Set up -> Monitoring and telemtery paramters

I`ve turned on these settings to capture the forms accessed , users sessions and DMF start and end events.

In the Environment tab, enter the FO environment ID and the mode.

If you are using LCS, environment id will be found in LCS page

If your environment is deployed in PPAC, navigate to PPAC admin center -> Environments

Map the environment ID in the telemtry page

Next comes the Application insight configuration

In the beginning of the post, I have mentioned to make a note of the Instrumentation Key and Connection string from Application Insight service.

These values are applied here.

Make sure the Environment mode set in this Application Insights Registry tab is same as the previous tab .

Now the App Insight is ready to capture the configured events.

How to try:

For the DMF Start and End job, I created an Export project which exports the customer groups.

After finishing the export, I could trace the event in App Insight logs.

Upon running Custom event log, the events are clearly captured. Both DMF start and end events are tracked here.

There are various tables which captures the insights based on the set ups in FO.

Upon clicking ‘Page view’,the insight displays the forms browsed

Regarding the user sessions, it captures the all the details like forms accessed by the user, time, session id etc.,

For instance, I accessed Client Performce options form from System adminstration and it has captured the insights

Insightful isn`t? I am going to deep dive more on the Telemtery and share my study in the coming posts.

Note: The events did not appear in Application Insights immediately after configuration. It took about an hour for them to show up, although the timestamps reflected activity from the moment the setup was completed
