LCS to PPAC: Smoothly Transition Your Updates

With the transition from LCS to PPAC, several processes now look different or entirely new to many of us.

This post provides an overview of how to apply Platform and Quality updates for Finance & Operations environments that were originally provisioned through LCS and are now managed in PPAC. It highlights the key changes, new steps introduced in PPAC, and important considerations to ensure updates are applied smoothly and consistently.

Using LCS

Microsoft has given a detailed release schedule here

Microsoft issues four service updates each year—in February, April, July, and October.

Customers may take up to four updates annually but must adopt at least two. They also have the option to pause one update at a time. A pause can be applied to the designated UAT sandbox environment, the production environment, or both.

When the pause period ends, if the customer has not manually updated to a supported version, Microsoft will automatically apply the latest service update according to the configuration in Microsoft Dynamics Lifecycle Services.

Go to LCS -> Select one of the higher tier environments and click ‘Full Details’

Scroll down till you reach ‘Available updates’ tab. This would give the details of your current version and the updates available. In my case, my environment is in 10.0.46 which has a quality update and also a new release to 10.0.47.

Check for the available updates

Quality update refers to the same PU but contains hotfixes released with different build numbers.

Service Update is an upgrade to new version where it contains both hotfixes and the new features. Microsoft document on ‘What`s new or changed in the latest version’ gives a clear picture on the new features, default features, modified ones or deprecated features.
