Azure Logic Apps: create Standard Logic App projects in Visual Studio Code from Azure portal export

How many times you had the need to create a new Azure Logic App workflow starting from an existing one? Personally, this happens a lot of time…

Starting with version 5.18.7 (published some days ago), the Azure Logic Apps (Standard) extension for Visual Studio Code provides the capability to create Standard Azure Logic App projects from an existing Logic App exported from the Azure portal.

To show how this new feature works, let’s open the Azure Portal and select an existing Azure Logic Apps standard app. Then, select Overview and on the Overview page toolbar, select Download app content:

This action downloads the contents of the Logic Apps application (workflows, connections, host configuration and app settings) as a package in zip format (named as <logic-app-name>.zip).

When the zip package is downloaded, open Visual Studio Code, connect to your Azure subscription account and then on the Workspace toolbar, open the Azure Logic Apps menu and select Create new logic app workspace from package:

The Create New Logic App Workspace from Package prompt window opens and here you can select the zip file package that you want to import:

After importing the zip package file, you are prompted to select the folder where you want to create your Logic App workspace:

THis will be the folder where your new Logic App project will be created.

Then, you’re prompted to select the workspace name:

and then to select the name of your Logic App project:

When creating the project, the system asks you also if you want to include the managed, Azure-hosted connectors in the connector gallery or not. Select Use connectors from Azure if you want to have the full available list of connectors for your workflow:

Then you need to select the Azure subscription to use for the project and the resource group where you want to create any Azure-hosted connections created during local development:

At the end opf these selections, the Azure Logic Apps extension sign in using Microsoft Entra ID in your subscription. When signed in, the Explorer window in Visual Studio Code opens and you will have your new workspace with your Azure Logic App project, which includes all the workflows, connection references, and relevant local app settings:

Please note that (as stated in the README file) the Create a workspace from a package capability doesn’t replace built-in connections that use a managed identity for authentication. To use a different authentication option, you must update these connections after deployment.

Now you can open your workflow in the integrated Visual Studio Code designer and start working:

As you can see, this is a very nice feature for creating new workflows starting from an existing one.
